From 1 July 2014, new Occupational Health and Safety Amendment Regulations 2014 came into effect in Victoria. These regulations introduced a new duty that requires the design of all new truck mounted concrete placing booms to be registered with the Victorian WorkCover Authority (VWA), formerly known as WorkSafe Victoria.
In recent months the Association has been working towards publishing its first ‘Safety Bulletin’ to keep industry participants abreast of current issues relevant to our members. This Safety Bulletin has been developed and published to remind owners and operators of concrete placing booms of their ‘duty of care’ when determining factors relevant to ‘who should’ and ‘how’ to carry out all inspections on their plant.
Of particular interest to the Association is the recent proposed draft of AS 2550.15 - Cranes, Hoist and Winches which has direct effect on members. The Association through its membership to ME005-15 Sub-Committee is proposing to reactivate the work of the committee and resolve the well overdue revision of the 1994 publication.
The B.C Construction Safety Alliance (BCCSA) in conjunction with the B.C Ready-Mixed Concrete Association (BCRMCA) are working towards the development of uniform safety standards for competencies in concrete pump operation and a certified testing regime in the province.
